Netflix’s Fort Monmouth Expansion Gains Approval for Phase Two

A Major Step Forward

Netflix’s plans to transform Fort Monmouth into one of the largest film production hubs on the East Coast advanced in a significant way this week. On Thursday, the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority gave unanimous approval for Phase Two of the project, clearing the path for Netflix to move ahead with its expanded vision.

What Phase Two Includes

The second phase covers 155 acres and is designed to serve as the studio’s main entrance and central hub. This stage of development will add eight new soundstages, along with additional production offices and support facilities. By securing this approval, Netflix now has the green light to begin shaping the parts of the campus that will welcome both productions and creative professionals to New Jersey.

Building on Phase One

This latest decision builds on the work already underway from Phase One, which broke ground earlier this year. That portion of the project spans 292 acres across Eatontown and Oceanport and will include 12 soundstages, backlot space, post-production facilities and office buildings. Demolition of existing structures is in progress and expected to continue for more than a year as the site is prepared for construction.

A Billion-Dollar Investment

Taken together, the two phases will reshape nearly 450 acres of the former Army base. Netflix’s total investment is projected to exceed $1 billion, with support from up to $387 million in state tax credits. This scale of development signals the company’s long-term commitment to New Jersey and its growing reputation as a hub for film and television production.

Timeline and Jobs

The overall project is expected to be completed by 2028, with construction and demolition work running in stages over the next several years. In addition to creating a state-of-the-art creative campus, the project is expected to generate thousands of construction jobs during development and more than 1,400 permanent jobs once the studios are operational.

Local Impact and Next Steps

The approval of Phase Two is being welcomed as both an economic driver and a cultural milestone for the region. For local businesses, the ripple effects will touch industries ranging from hospitality and restaurants to retail and professional services. At the same time, community discussions are already focusing on infrastructure needs, particularly how local roadways will handle increased traffic once the complex is fully operational.

Looking Ahead

With Phase Two secured, Netflix is now positioned to move forward with a comprehensive campus that blends creative ambition with economic opportunity. What was once an abandoned military base is rapidly becoming the centerpiece of New Jersey’s growing role in the entertainment industry, a transformation that will continue to unfold over the next several years.
