Edits by Instagram: What You Need to Know

This past Sunday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri unveiled “Edits,” a new video editing app designed to rival CapCut. This announcement coincided with the temporary unavailability of CapCut in the U.S. due to federal restrictions on ByteDance-owned applications.

Key Features of Edits:

  • High-Quality Camera: Capture clips up to 10 minutes long with enhanced resolution, framerate and dynamic range settings.
  • Advanced Editing Tools: Utilize green screen effects, video overlays, AI-powered image animation and a variety of fonts, sound effects, filters and stickers.
  • Inspiration and Drafts Tabs: Organize ideas and drafts efficiently, with options to share projects with collaborators.
  • Performance Insights: Access a live insights dashboard to monitor metrics such as follower engagement, skip rates and overall reach.

Edits is scheduled for release on the iOS App Store on March 13, 2025. While it shares similarities with CapCut, Mosseri emphasizes that Edits offers a broader range of creative tools, catering to a more specialized user base. This strategic move aligns with Instagram’s commitment to providing top-notch tools for creators, especially as the future of TikTok and ByteDance-owned apps remains uncertain.

In addition to Edits, Instagram plans to introduce a generative AI editing feature in 2025, powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model. This tool will allow users to make extensive changes to their videos using simple text prompts, enabling transformations such as altering backgrounds, outfits and appearances without requiring advanced editing skills.

These developments position Instagram as a formidable player in the video editing landscape, offering creators innovative tools to enhance their content. With Edits and upcoming AI-powered features, Instagram hopes to redefine the standards for what creators can achieve, cementing its role as a leader in the ever-evolving world of digital content creation.
