Team Waives Defender Kayla Mills
Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) announced today that it has released forward Imani Dorsey from her national team replacement contract and signed her to a full professional contract. To make room on the roster for Dorsey, the team has also waived defender Kayla Mills.
Dorsey, 22, was the no. 5 overall selection by Sky Blue FC in the 2018 NWSL College Draft this past January. The Duke University product made her professional debut for Sky Blue FC last weekend against the Washington Spirit at Yurcak Field, where she was in the Starting XI and played 71 minutes.
“Imani had a very good performance for us this past Friday, which was obviously the first start of her professional career. She plays with a lot of explosiveness, and her movement off the ball provides a great addition to our attack,” said Denise Reddy, Sky Blue FC head coach. “We also want to take the time today to thank Kayla for all of her contributions to Sky Blue FC, and we want to wish her nothing but success in the future.”
Dorsey was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2017 and received United Soccer Coaches First Team All-America accolades. Last fall, she had a standout senior campaign at Duke, leading the Blue Devils with 47 shots, 38 points and a team-best 14 goals. Additionally, she recorded five game-winners and made 25 starts. She also went on an incredible offensive run where she scored a goal in six straight contests.
Internationally, the Maryland native has competed within the U.S. Women’s National Team system at the U-15, U-17, U-18 and U-19 levels.
Mills was in her second season with Sky Blue FC after the team selected her with the no. 4 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. During her time with the club, she made 13 starts over 16 appearances.
Sky Blue FC starts a three-game road trip this weekend, first taking on the Orlando Pride on Saturday. The team will return home to Yurcak Field on July 7 to host the Chicago Red Stars. Tickets for that match are available now online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
