Former NLL Commissioner George Daniel to Lead Search for Next UWLX Commissioner
The United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) announced on Thursday that Michele DeJuliis will be stepping down as UWLX Commissioner after serving in that role over the past year. In conjunction with the announcement, former National Lacrosse League (NLL) Commissioner George Daniel has been named advisor to a transitional team that will lead the search for the next league commissioner.
“Michele provided outstanding leadership for the UWLX over the past year,” said Digit Murphy, UWLX CEO and co-founder. “We are very grateful for all of her contributions in helping us establish the first-ever professional women’s lacrosse league in this country. We now look forward to building upon the foundation that has been created as we head into a dynamic future for the UWLX and professional women’s sports in general.”
DeJuliis, a 2013 U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee, was named the first commissioner of the UWLX when the league was formed in 2015, and she is the only person who has performed in that role since the league’s inception.
Murphy, along with Daniel and UWLX co-founder Aronda Kirby, has established a search committee that will develop a strategic plan to find the next commissioner of the league. Daniel will spearhead that initiative as an advisor and counsel to the UWLX, providing the league with nearly seven years of experience as NLL Commissioner.
History was made in 2016 when the UWLX launched as the first-ever professional women’s lacrosse league, capping off its debut season in July when the Long Island Sound defeated the Boston Storm in the inaugural UWLX Championship Game, 13-8. Along with the Sound and Storm, the Philadelphia Force and Baltimore Ride compile the four-club roster of the groundbreaking league.
