Sky Blue FC Meets North Carolina Courage in Stand Alone NWSL Match on Wednesday
The top spot on the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Table is up for grabs on Wednesday night, as second-place Sky Blue FC (3-2-1, 10 points) travels to the first-place North Carolina Courage (4-2-0, 12 points). Kickoff for the match is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at WakeMed Soccer Park, and fans can watch the action live on NWSLsoccer.com and Go90.com.
“Wednesday evening’s match should be a very entertaining game,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “Even with the quick turnaround, we feel that we have adequately prepared our team, and we look forward to squaring off against one of the very best clubs in the league. We feel that if we meet our potential, it will be a positive outcome for Sky Blue FC.”
Sky Blue FC enters this contest on the heels of back-to-back wins against the Houston Dash, both of which occurred as the NWSL on Lifetime Game of the Week. Most recently, Sky Blue FC used a dramatic finish on Saturday to defeat the Dash, 2-1. After midfielder Sarah Killion registered her NWSL-leading fifth goal of the season by converting a penalty kick in the 20th minute, Andressinha scored her own rebound in the 40th minute to equalize for Houston, 1-1.
With the 1-1 count still on the scoreboard, forward Leah Galton earned a free kick opportunity from the left flank in the 84th minute. Midfielder Daphne Corboz then lofted a well-struck feed into the penalty area, where Costa Rica international Raquel Rodriguez stepped around a defender before touching the ball into space and firing the game-winner into the back of the net. The winning tally was the second of the season for Rodriguez, who also finished an 82nd minute strike against FC Kansas City in the 2017 Sky Blue FC home opener at Yurcak Field.
After winning its first four games of the season, North Carolina has fallen in its past two outings, most recently at the hands of the Chicago Red Stars last weekend, 3-1.
Wednesday night marks the first-ever meeting between Sky Blue FC and the Courage, which relocated to North Carolina this past offseason after playing its first four NWSL campaigns as the Western New York Flash.
After playing North Carolina on Wednesday, Sky Blue FC returns home to Yurcak Field this Saturday, May 27, hosting the Orlando Pride in its third game over the span of a week.
