Furtuna Velaj Scores Brace to Lead NY Surf Past Magic

New York Surf Soccer Club | United Women's Soccer

New York Surf Soccer Club (3-1-1, 10 points) returned to United Women’s Soccer (UWS) action on Saturday, blanking the New York Magic (0-3-1, 1 points) at Reinhart Field, 5-0. Pacing the NY Surf attack with a brace was forward Furtuna Velaj, while goalkeeper Colleen Hickey recorded the clean slate in net.

Forward Erica Murphy opened the scoring today on an unassisted tally in the 4th minute, touching the ball around a Magic defender before firing a rising shot past goalkeeper Sierra Bonham. With the goal, Murphy has now scored in three consecutive matches, with this finish being the eventual game-winner on Saturday.

Murphy then got on the other side of the stat sheet in the 31st minute, hitting a through-ball that found its way into the center of the penalty area. The beneficiary of the distribution was forward Megan O’Connor, who quickly collected the feed and struck it into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 affair.

NY Surf eventually extended its lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute. On that scoring sequence, defender Totianya Guadalupe chipped a ball towards the far post, which was then deflected to the feet of midfielder Maegen Doyle. Wasting no time, Doyle quickly fired the ball home for her second goal of the season.

The final two scores in this match-up were provided by Velaj, raising her season total to four tallies. Her first goal came in the 66th minute, as midfielder Talani Barnett delivered a well-timed feed that played Velaj into a 1v1 situation with Bonham. Before allowing the Magic netminder any time to collapse on her, the Albania international quickly pinged a ball past Bonham that placed a 4-0 count onto the scoreboard.

In the 87th minute, Velaj struck once again for NY Surf. On the play, she found herself in the perfect position to collect a rebound in the final third, calmly slotting a ball under Bonham that found the back of the net.

In addition to great play by Hickey in net, NY Surf saw outstanding form on its back line, which was led by Guadalupe, Brooke Salmon, Hannah Uhlan and Amy Marron.
