Greater Flemington Soccer Club recently teamed up with New Jersey Youth Soccer to host a Celebration of Soccer event at Lenape Park in Flemington, N.J. In addition to a group picnic and fun slate of soccer activities, the day was also highlighted by special appearances from Sky Blue FC midfielder Nicole Baxter and the New York Red Bulls Street Team.

“It was a fantastic day at Lenape Park,” said Steve Fecho, President of Greater Flemington Soccer Club. “GFSC families got to enjoy the sunshine and humidity, play soccer themed games, watch the NYRB Street Team perform and meet a professional soccer player from Sky Blue FC. We are extremely fortunate to have committed parent volunteers, partnerships from organizations like NJYS, NYRB and SBFC along with contributions from our generous community businesses. This spirit was on full display for all to enjoy and shows why this sport continues to grow across the country.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Rick Meana, NJYS Director of Coaching.

“Kids have a natural spontaneity and free spirit about them,” he stated. “That is the goal of the NJYS Celebration of Soccer event, spontaneous and free play in a series of street-like small sided soccer games – no coaching and no referees. This was on full display at the Greater Flemington Soccer Club’s Annual Picnic. Children of all ages experienced multiple contacts with the ball during the games which translated to many challenges and decision making opportunities.”

All of the athletes and families enjoyed the opportunity to interact with a professional NWSL player, and Sky Blue FC midfielder Nicole Baxter confirmed that the feeling was mutual on her side as well.

“The kickoff picnic with GFSC and CAPS was really exciting!” she remarked. “It was awesome to see all of the families coming together to celebrate the start of a new season. The atmosphere was lively, and I met a ton of really great people. I am happy I had the opportunity to be a part of it!”
