Furtuna Velaj, Brooke Salmon Named to First Team; Erica Murphy Receives Second Team Nod
United Women’s Soccer (UWS) announced its 2017 All-East Conference Teams on Friday, with three New York Surf Soccer Club players receiving All-Conference recognition.
NY Surf had two players receive All-East Conference First Team honors, with forward Furtuna Velaj and defender Brooke Salmon both being selected. Velaj made nine appearance this season and played a total of 691 minutes, recording a well-balanced five goals and three assists for an accumulative 13 points. Salmon did not miss a single minute for NY Surf during the 2017 campaign, starting in all 10 matches and playing 900 minutes. One the most impactful defenders in UWS, Salmon also added an assist to the stat sheet.
Receiving an All-UWS Second Team nod was forward Erica Murphy, who paced the NY Surf attack with eight goals and 17 points, registering one assist. Murphy averaged better than a goal per game, tallying 594 minutes over seven total appearances.
In addition to her All-East Conference First Team selection, Salmon was one of five players in the conference who was named as part of the Iron Women of the Year. The recognition acknowledges those athletes who played every minute of every game during the 2017 season.
