New York Surf Soccer Club (3-1-2, 11 points) will return to United Women’s Soccer (UWS) action this weekend, looking to avenge its lone loss of the season when it hosts the Lancaster Inferno (3-3-0, 9 points) on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m., with the action going down at Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx.
NY Surf enters this contest on the heels of a hard-fought 1-1 road draw with defending UWS East Conference champion New Jersey Copa FC last Sunday. After Copa got out to a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute of that pairing, NY Surf eventually found the equalizer in the 55th minute.
On that scoring sequence, a short corner was played from the left flag to Albania international Furtuna Velaj, who peeled off a defender before sending a beautiful cross to the far post. Perfectly positioned for the feed was midfielder Flo Gamby, who poked out her right foot to redirect the ball into the back of the net.
Lancaster arrives at this Saturday afternoon fixture after defeating the New York Magic last weekend, 3-1, with three different players scoring goals for the Inferno.
Saturday marks the second meeting of the season between these two clubs. The first time they played, NY Surf recorded a 4-2 victory over the New England Mutiny in the Bronx on a Saturday night before heading to Lancaster to finish off the busy weekend on some heavy legs the next day. NY Surf and the Inferno then engaged in a highly contested match-up that resulted in a 2-1 tally in favor of Lancaster.
Tickets can be purchased on Saturday at the entrance into Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY Maritime College, which is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. Adult tickets are $10, while kids 16 and under get into the match for $5. Additionally, any kids wearing a NY Surf jersey will receive free admission into the stadium.
