New York Surf Splits Weekend Doubleheader

New York Surf Soccer Club | United Women's Soccer

New York Surf Soccer Club (4-2-2, 14 points) returned to United Women’s Soccer (UWS) action this weekend, splitting a weekend doubleheader that included a Saturday home match with the Lancaster Inferno (3-4-0, 9 points) and a Sunday road contest with the New England Mutiny (5-2-0, 15 points).

NY Surf kicked off the busy weekend when it hosted the Lancaster Inferno at Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx. In the Saturday match, NY Surf raced out to a 3-0 advantage before eventually claiming a 3-1 result.

The first goal of that outing came in the 14th minute, as Sara Plowman sent in a corner to the middle of the penalty area, where Talani Barnett was able to go high and head the ball into the back of the net. With the early score, NY Surf found itself with a 1-0 edge and was able to settle more comfortably into its game plan.

In the 58th minute, NY Surf stretched the lead to two goals in style. On the sequence, Trista Seara sent a ball into the box, where Meagen Doyle was the recipient of her distribution. Upon gathering the feed, Doyle then popped the ball into the air before wowing the hometown fans with a well-struck bicycle kick.

NY Surf then made it a 3-0 tally in the 65th minute, as Furtuna Velaj twice flicked a ball inside the area before chipping it over Lancaster goalkeeper Jordan Camp. The goal by Velaj gives her five on the season, which is just two off the UWS lead.

While the Inferno would eventually break through in the 70th minute on a Siobhan Bross to Tessa McKibben connection, NY Surf kept them off the board the rest of the way to claim a 3-1 result.

With little time to enjoy their win over Lancaster, NY Surf headed to New England for a road pairing with the Mutiny on Sunday. Playing on heavy legs, NY Surf battled it out for the full 90 minutes but unfortunately found itself on the wrong side of a 2-0 final. Scoring the two goals for New England were Charlie Branch (14th minute) and Chanel Johnson (67th minute).

Next up, NY Surf hits the road this Saturday to play the New York Magic at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m. NY Surf then returns home to Reinhart Field on Saturday, July 8, hosting the Long Island Rough Riders at 2:00 p.m. in its 2017 UWS regular season finale. Tickets can be purchased on game day at the entrance into Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY Maritime College, which is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. Adult tickets are $10, while kids 16 and under get into the match for $5. Additionally, any kids wearing a NY Surf jersey will receive free admission into the stadium.
