NY Surf Defeats New England Mutiny on Saturday, Falls to Lancaster Inferno on Sunday
New York Surf Soccer Club (2-1-1, 7 points) finished up a busy weekend in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) play on Sunday, falling for the first time during the 2017 season to the Lancaster Inferno (2-2-0, 6 points) at Millersville University, 2-1. The match came just one day after NY Surf handed the New England Mutiny (3-1-0, 9 points) its only loss of the year, 4-2.
Lancaster opened the scoring just before halftime on Sunday, as Emilie Kupsov was able to connect with Tesa McKibben in the 42nd minute. That 1-0 score held over the final minutes before intermission, and the Inferno headed into the locker room with a one goal edge.
The Lancaster lead was later stretched to 2-0 in the 50th minute after the host side was awarded a penalty kick. Stepping over the ensuing try was Kupsov, who netted her second goal of the match after converting on the penalty attempt.
NY Surf continued to battle throughout the second half and eventually earned a gritty goal in the 70th minute. On the scoring sequence, midfielder Flo Gamby fired off a shot that Lancaster netminder Jordan Kamp initially saved. The goalkeeper deflection then landed at the feet of a well-positioned Erica Murphy, who calmly put away the rebound to make it 2-1.
Over the final 20 minutes, NY Surf fought for an equalizer, but the Inferno defense was able to prevent the visiting side from doing any more damage. When the final whistle had been blown, Lancaster found itself with a tight 2-1 victory.
On Saturday evening, NY Surf hosted the New England Mutiny at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx, opening its account in the just the 8th minute of action. On that successful series, Gamby sent a ball into the area for Jordan Clark, who was able to redirect a header into the back of the net for an early 1-0 advantage.
Staying on the aggressive, NY Surf continued to press forward and soon extended its lead to 2-0 in the 13th minute, as Murphy used some crafty footwork to put away her first goal as a member of NY Surf.
While New England was able to close the gap to 2-1 in the 29th minute, forward Maegen Doyle responded for NY Surf in the 54th minute to give her team back a two-goal edge, 3-1. Doyle continued her stellar play into the 59th minute, setting up Albania international Furtuna Velaj to hang a 4-1 tally on the scoreboard.
The Mutiny did climb back within a two-goal deficit in the 73rd minute behind a successful penalty conversion, but NY Surf would not allow them to get any closer. When the final whistle had been blown, NY Surf claimed a 4-2 win.
NY Surf returns home to SUNY Maritime College this Saturday, June 10, hosting the New York Magic at 2:00 p.m. SUNY Maritime College is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx, and kickoff for that match is set for 4:30 p.m.
