NY Surf Earns Critical Road Point Against New Jersey Copa FC

New York Surf | New Jersey Copa FC

New York Surf Soccer Club (3-1-2, 11 points) returned to United Women’s Soccer (UWS) action on Sunday, picking up a critical road point against defending UWS East Conference champion New Jersey Copa FC (4-1-1, 13 points) at Saint John Vianney High School, 1-1.

After some great back-and-forth action in the early-going, Copa opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. On the play, forward Krystyna Freda was fed distribution on the right flank outside the penalty area. After receiving the ball, she sent a lofting shot towards the target that was struck at a very difficult angle for NY Surf netminder Colleen Hickey. The strike had just enough spin on it to hit the left-side netting, which gave the hosts a 1-0 edge.

NY Surf remained composed after that tally and eventually found the equalizer in the 55th minute. On the series, a short corner was played from the left flag to Albania international Furtuna Velaj, who peeled off a defender before sending a beautiful cross to the far post. Perfectly positioned for the feed was midfielder Flo Gamby, who poked out her right foot to redirect the ball into the back of the net.

With the match level at one goal apiece, both teams battled to find a go-ahead score. Both attacks were able to create opportunities, but the 1-1 tally remained when the final whistle was eventually blown. Following the result, NY Surf adds a critical road point to its 2017 resume and is now just two points off the top of the UWS East Conference table.

Next up, NY Surf returns home to Reinhart Field this Saturday, June 24, hosting the Lancaster Inferno at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on game day at the entrance into Reinhart Field on the campus of SUNY Maritime College, which is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. Adult tickets are $10, while kids 16 and under get into the match for $5. Additionally, any kids wearing a NY Surf jersey will receive free admission into the stadium.
