After Hosting New England Mutiny on Saturday in First Place Showdown, NY Surf Heads to Lancaster
New York Surf Soccer Club (1-0-1, 4 points) heads into a busy weekend in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) play, beginning with a first-place showdown against the New England Mutiny (2-0-0, 6 points) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. That home match will take place at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx, followed up by a trip to Pennsylvania on Sunday to face the Lancaster Inferno (1-1-0, 3 points).
Both NY Surf and New England were off last weekend in observance of Memorial Day, so each club should be on fresh legs in Saturday’s battle for the top of the UWS Eastern Conference. NY Surf enters the fixture after playing a home-and-home series with the storied Western New York Flash over the first two weeks of the UWS season.
In the first meeting, which took place at SUNY Maritime College, NY Surf got out to an early 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute. On that conversion, Brooke Salmon fed a corner kick into the penalty area that was finished off by Megan O’Connor, and NY Surf would never relinquish that one-goal lead. When the final whistle had blown, the 1-0 score line remained in favor of NY Surf.
The following weekend, NY Surf raced to a 2-0 edge over Western New York at All High Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y. A Meagen Doyle to Flo Gamby connection in the 43rd minute provided the first goal, while Doyle found Furtuna Velaj in the 57th minute to stretch the tally to 2-0. The Flash got itself within a single score in the 61st minute thanks to a Carissima Cutrona notch, and Madisyn Pezzino recorded a late equalizer in the 87th minute to hang a 2-2 final.
Saturday marks the first road fixture of the season for the Mutiny, which kicked off its season by defeating the Rochester Lancers on UWS Opening Weekend, 5-1. In its second match, New England was able to knock off the Lancaster Inferno, 3-2. Facing a Mutiny attack that has scored eight goals in its first two games, NY Surf will look to bring solid defensive pressure to the pitch on Saturday.
After falling to New England in the first match of its 2017 UWS campaign, Lancaster rebounded last weekend by rolling to a 4-1 road victory over the New York Magic. Before hosting NY Surf on Sunday, the Inferno travels to New Jersey Copa FC for a Saturday matinee.
Tickets for Saturday’s home match between NY Surf and the Mutiny can be purchased at the entrance into SUNY Maritime College, which is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx. Adult tickets are $10, while kids 16 and under get into the match for $5. Additionally, any kids wearing a NY Surf jersey will receive free admission into the stadium.
