NY Surf Seeks Second Straight Win to Open 2017 UWS Season
New York Surf Soccer Club (1-0-0, 3 points) will be seeking a second consecutive win to open the 2017 United Women’s Soccer (UWS) season on Saturday, playing the first road fixture of its inaugural UWS campaign against the Western New York Flash (0-1-1, 1 point). Kickoff for the match is set for 4 p.m., with the action taking place at All High Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y.
NY Surf opened the 2017 UWS season last weekend when it defeated the Flash at SUNY Maritime College on Sunday, 1-0. Scoring the lone tally in that contest was forward Megan O’Connor, who finished off a corner kick from midfielder Brooke Salmon in the 14th minute. After gaining the early advantage, NY Surf buckled down defensively and kept Western New York off the scoreboard. Registering the shutout in net for the club was goalkeeper Colleen Hickey.
“It was important to get a win at home to start the season so that we are feeling confidently going on the road,” said Michele Canning, NY Surf head coach. “Playing the same opponent can be challenging, but our roster is different this week. I think that will give us a new look and make a positive impact on the game.”
Among the players joining the NY Surf roster this weekend include former Rutgers University standout Erica Murphy, who started the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season in camp with Sky Blue FC.
The Flash opened its 2017 UWS campaign with a pair of road fixtures last weekend, first drawing with the Long Island Rough Riders on Saturday, 1-1, before falling to NY Surf in their Sunday pairing.
Like NY Surf, Western New York is also playing its first season in UWS after the team spent the previous four years in the NWSL, winning a league championship in 2016 before the professional club relocated to North Carolina this past offseason. Historically, the Flash has also captured league championships in the USL W-League, Women’s Professional Soccer and Women’s Premier Soccer League Elite.
After this weekend, NY Surf returns home to SUNY Maritime College on Saturday, June 3, to host the New England Mutiny. SUNY Maritime College is located at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in the Bronx, and kickoff for that match is set for 4:30 p.m.
