After Brace on Saturday, Kerr Now Owns Franchise Record at 15 Goals

After this past weekend, Sky Blue FC (5-4-1, 16 points) has a new record-holder when it comes to most goals scored in franchise history. Following a two-goal performance that led Sky Blue FC over Portland Thorns FC, 3-1, forward Sam Kerr now finds herself in sole possession of the club record with 15 goals.

“We are so proud of Sam, and we know how hard she has worked to regain full fitness after enduring some serious injuries in the past,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “We have nothing but full confidence that this is just the beginning of what will be a very special time for Sam and Sky Blue FC in the coming years. Without a shadow of a doubt, she is one of the most dangerous and most exciting players in women’s world soccer. We are so fortunate and proud to have her wearing the Sky Blue FC jersey.”

Coming into the season, Kerr had scored 11 goals since arriving in New Jersey in 2015. By registering a brace on Saturday night, she now has four goals on the season and 15 total goals in a Sky Blue FC kit. The Australia international was acquired by Sky Blue FC by means of a late 2014 trade with the Western New York Flash, which is where she spent her first two professional campaigns. For her NWSL career, Kerr has now recorded 30 goals and 14 assists.

“Obviously, this is a massive honor, but scoring goals is more of a reflection of the team that I have around me,” Kerr said. “I would not be able to score these goals if it was not for my teammates, and I am just so lucky to be part of such an amazing club. We have a really good team this year and hopefully have a lot more goals coming over the remainder of the season.”

This club distinction continues what has been a tremendous year for Kerr. After receiving the Julie Dolan Medal as the 2016-17 Westfield W-League Most Valuable Player in April, she was named the NWSL Player of the Month in May and now finds herself just one goal off the NWSL lead of five goals scored (which includes her teammate Sarah Killion).

Prior to Kerr breaking the record, former Sky Blue FC forward Nadia Nadim was the club record-holder with 13 goals.

Next up for Sky Blue FC is a road contest with the Chicago Red Stars this Sunday at 6:00 p.m. The New Jersey outfit will then return home to Yurcak Field on Wednesday, June 28, hosting the Orlando Pride for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Individual tickets for that match are available now online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
