Sky Blue FC (0-17-6, 6 points) returned to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action on Tuesday to play its second road match in three days, falling to the Chicago Red Stars (9-4-10, 37 points) at Toyota Park, 5-0.

The Red Stars opened the scoring in the 18th minute of play this evening. On that sequence, the ball was moved up the left flank before Sam Kerr placed a feed for Arin Gilliland just outside the 18. Gilliland then delivered service to the far post, where Alyssa Mautz was able to loft a header into the net. With the tally, Chicago took a 1-0 advantage.

The same score line remained when the two clubs broke for halftime, but Chicago increased its lead to a pair of goals in the 46th minute. Following a give-and-go with Yuki Nagasato in the midfield, Gilliland carried down the left side of the field before serving a cross for Mautz, who one-timed the feed to make it 2-0 in favor of the Red Stars.

In the 64th minute, the gap was stretched to 3-0 after Brooke Elby delivered a well-placed ball into the area that found Sam Kerr, who headed a powerful shot on target. Sky Blue FC netminder Kailen Sheridan was able to get a hand on the strike, but it is a bit too heavy to manage.

The hosts increased the deficit to 4-0 in the 80th minute, with Gilliland again starting the scoring sequence with service from the flank. After whipping in a ball towards the box, Kerr chested it down for Rosie White as she ran into the area. White then one-timed a left-footed finish to give her team a fourth goal of the night.

The final score of this contest came in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, as Michele Vasconcelos sprung herself on a run by playing a give-and-go with White. After taking a quick touch of the pass from White, Vasconcelos slotted a ball into the back of the net to hang a 5-0 result.

Sky Blue FC will now return home to Yurcak Field for its 2018 season finale this Saturday, September 8, hosting the Orlando Pride for a noon kickoff. Tickets for that game are available online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849). The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a Carli Lloyd bobblehead, courtesy of Brielle Orthopedics.
