Sky Blue FC (4-3-1, 13 points) was notified today that forward Sam Kerr has been named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association for the month of May.
“We are proud of Sam for winning this award,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “She is very deserving of the honor, and it is exemplary of what we see from her day in and day out at training. The most exciting thing is that the best is yet to come from her performances, as well as those players around her. As excited as we are for Sam, she would be the first to say that every bit of success our team achieves is a collective effort.”
Kerr, 23, registered two goals and two assists in May to help Sky Blue FC to three wins, while the New Jersey club ends the month just two points off the top of the NWSL Table. The Australia international scored a goal and an assist in two separate matches, giving her 28 goals over her NWSL career and leaving her two shy of becoming just the third player in league history to eclipse the 30-goal mark.
In her most recent outing, Kerr scored a 43rd minute equalizer this past weekend against the Orlando Pride before sending a perfectly-placed header to Maya Hayes for the game-winner in the 82nd minute. The first half goal gave her 13 since joining Sky Blue FC in 2015, which is level with Nadia Nadim for the most in franchise history.
Kerr has been named the NWSL Player of the Week twice before, but this marks her first NWSL Player of the Month acknowledgement. She also stands as the first Sky Blue FC player to receive the accolade since August 2014 (Nadia Nadim). The other two Sky Blue FC players who have been honored as NWSL Player of the Month are Brittany Cameron (May 2013) and Monica Ocampo (August 2013).
Sky Blue FC returns to action this Saturday, June 3, hosting Portland Thorns FC at Yurcak Field. Kickoff for that match is slated for 7:00 p.m., and tickets are available now online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
