New Jersey Club Opens 2017 NWSL Season with Second Consecutive Road Match

Sky Blue FC (0-0-1, 1 point) will return to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action this weekend, traveling to New England for a Sunday match-up with the Boston Breakers (0-1-0, 0 points) at Jordan Field. The action gets underway at 4:00 p.m. ET, and fans can watch the game live via NWSL streaming partner go90.

“We are very excited to get up to Boston and build upon our performance from last weekend in Seattle,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “Boston is a very dangerous team, and we definitely respect them. However, we know that if we play to our strengths and full potential, we will come away with the desired result.”
Sky Blue FC enters this Sunday’s road fixture on the heels of a 1-1 draw with Seattle Reign FC last Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. In that contest, Sarah Killion traded a second half penalty conversion with Reign FC midfielder Megan Rapinoe for the lone scores of the evening. Three Sky Blue FC rookies started and made their professional debuts in the match (Mandy Freeman, Kayla Mills, Kailen Sheridan), where the New Jersey club out-shot Seattle by a count of 17-11 and forced Reign FC netminder Haley Kopmeyer to make eight saves. The performance by Kopmeyer ultimately led to her being named the NWSL Player of the Week.

Boston opened its 2017 season on the road as well last weekend, falling to FC Kansas City by a tally of 2-0. Sydney Leroux and Amy Rodriguez were the goal-scorers for FC Kansas City in the pairing.

During the 2016 season, Sky Blue FC swept the Breakers with a 1-0 win in New Jersey followed up by a 3-1 victory in Boston. Historically, Sky Blue FC leads the overall series with the Breakers, 6-2-3, with the record standing at 2-2-1 in Boston.

After starting the year with consecutive road games, Sky Blue FC will play its 2017 regular season home opener when it hosts FC Kansas City on Sunday, April 30, at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J. Kickoff for that match is slated for 6:00 p.m., and tickets are available now online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
