Sam Kerr Seeks to Become First Player in NWSL History to Score 17 Goals in a Season
Sky Blue FC (9-10-2, 26 points) will return to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action on Sunday, hosting the Washington Spirit (4-13-4, 16 points) at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:00 p.m. ET, and fans can purchase tickets online or by calling 888-SBFC-TIX (888-723-2849).
“We are going into Sunday with the expectation of getting three points,” said David Hodgson, Sky Blue FC assistant coach. “We know the playoffs are still very much a possibility, so that is where we are focused. At the same time, we approach this game by giving Washington a lot of respect. They have beaten us twice this year, so we are looking to avenge that a bit. We had a good week of training, and our goal now is to come away with the three points on Sunday.”
This weekend marks the third and final meeting of the season between Sky Blue FC and the Washington Spirit, with the Spirit coming up victorious in the previous two encounters. The first match was back in April at the Maryland SoccerPlex, where the two teams exchanged goals en route to an eventual 4-3 win for Washington. The last pairing occurred in early August, with Sky Blue FC taking a 1-0 lead into halftime before Washington rallied for four second-half goals to claim a 4-1 result.
More history will be on the line on Sunday, as Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr looks to become the first player in NWSL history to score 17 goals in a single season. She is currently level with Kim Little (2014) on 16 scores, with her next finish giving her sole possession of the all-time record.
Sky Blue FC leads the five-year head-to-head series over the Washington Spirit with a 7-6-2 overall record. The New Jersey outfit also holds a 4-3-0 edge at Yurcak Field.
